Family Yoga at West Stow: A Summer Treat for All Ages
As a parent of two boys, I remember only too well that feeling of dread when the long six-week summer holiday looms — and I’m a primary school teacher! Keeping children busy, active and happy for that length of time can feel like a huge responsibility, and the reality is, it’s not always possible.
But alongside that, I also hold really fond memories of the times we did manage to organise little local trips or activities. Those moments of one-to-one time — exploring something new together, laughing, moving and simply being present — are incredibly special. For parents, grandparents and carers alike, finding opportunities like this that fit easily into busy lives can be a real challenge.
That’s exactly why Family Yoga Flow at West Stow has been created.
These are three relaxed Friday morning sessions in August, designed especially for primary-aged children and the adults who care for them — whether that’s parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or carers. Each session offers a chance to step away from the pressure of “filling the day” and instead enjoy a meaningful, shared experience together.
The sessions are fun, playful and imaginative, taking you and your child on a gentle journey through movement and breath, ending in a calming relaxation. It’s not about being “good at yoga” — it’s about connecting, unwinding and enjoying time together. You can book one session or come along to all three.
Each session is £15 for one adult and an accompanying child, making it an easy, affordable way to add something special to your summer.
For grandparents in particular, these sessions offer a lovely way to stay active while spending quality time with grandchildren in a calm and supportive environment. For parents, it’s a chance to slow down, reset and recharge alongside your child, rather than constantly planning and organising.
We’re also incredibly lucky to have the beautiful West Stow Anglo-Saxon village right on our doorstep. This unique setting adds an extra layer of discovery, linking the sessions to rich local history that children will also encounter in their primary school learning — making it both fun and meaningful.
Here’s what’s in store:
Stretch & Shoot
An archery-inspired session where we’ll stretch and “draw the bow,” exploring balance, focus and stillness — with plenty of laughter along the way.
Dragon’s Breath
A playful session full of energy where we’ll create mountains and caves, practise powerful “dragon breaths,” and build strength and confidence as we imagine taking flight.
Viking Voyage
Our final journey where we’ll become Viking explorers — rowing together, striking warrior poses and discovering rhythm, strength and teamwork.
Whatever the theme, yoga offers lasting benefits for both children and adults. It helps us understand our bodies, connect with our breath, and develop simple tools to manage emotions and stress — something that’s just as valuable for grown-ups as it is for children in today’s busy world.
Giving yourself — and your child or grandchild — that time to pause, move and reconnect might just become one of the highlights of your summer.
